God and Statistics

Compare 1999 figures for religious belief in the US to the figures in Denmark. I am afriad it does not bode well for the BKWSU center in Copenhagen. From the same site, in India, 93.3% percent belonging to a religious denomination and 79.5% identifying as a religious person but only 16% believe that religious leaders should influence the government.

    Percent believing in heaven.
    US: 87.5%
    Denmark: 18.4%
    India: 72%

    Percent believing in hell.
    US: 74.6%
    Denmark: 9.5%
    India: 68.5%

Percent finding comfort and strength from religion.
    US: 79.5%
    Denmark: 32.6%
    India: 84.6%

Percent believing in the concept of sin.
    US: 89.5% (1995)
    Denmark: 20.6%

Percent believing that things would be better if there are more people with strong religious beliefs.
    US: 48.6%
    Denmark: 5.6%
    India: 31.2%

    Percent considering religion important.
    US: 82.5%
    Denmark: 27%
India: 80.9% and, interesting, Percent confident in religious organizations ... 82.2%
Elsewhere, Denmark topped a study to find the "happiest place on earth". Followed closely by Switzerland and Austria. The US came 23rd. So there doesn't seem to be any correlation between general happiness and religious belief. The UK, which registered roughly half of the religious belief found in the US, finished 18 places behind the US in the happiness poll, so whether a nation is religious or not seems to make no difference.
