Did a Google this evening and came up with this tidbit from a website called ballofdirt Very Happy Anyway, this guy apparently was on a jaunt around India (didn't read the whole article) and had this to say at one point in his diary:

Quote:
Next stop down the mountain was the Brahma Kumaris Spiritual University, which Lisa had heard was a cult. So we went inside, and were given an impromptu tour by a man whose English was terrible, not because he couldn't speak it well, but because he thought he could and became impatient each time we asked him to repeat something. Anyway, turns out, their sect is as wacky and rooted in false logic as the Hare Krishnas. I took a picture of their tree of knowledge, which, at the top, depicted America and the USSR as cats with human heads and different colored hats sticking arrows into a fiery ball called "hell". Bizarre. I converted at once.

Also found this: What is a cult? I felt a chill of recognition as I read about the 5 characteristics and 7 mind control techniques described.

Their "not exhaustive list" has more than 250 entries! I guess you only have to be non-mainstream to get on it - otherwise, how could they leave out the Catholic Church and the Communist Party? Laughing

And how did "skinheads" get on the list? Not much "demand for purity" there. Laughing

hmmn ... I don't know " racial purity " scores pretty high with the Right Wing ones!

I tell you, these Yankee-import born-again Christian " anti-cult cults " make me more sick than the so called cults do.

What is a cult?

It almost seems to boil down to " anyone that is not us ".

At least folks in cults lead an interesting life, question life, travel the world and get to meet differnt folk from themselves.

Agreed, the anti-cult movement is inherently intolerant and anti-freedom, especially in the hands of a government (c.f. PRC and Falun Gong), or when they cast their net so widely as to catch everybody.

Admittedly, that picture is very, very funny, even though it remains a personal favourite of mine! Laughing (It is the one in the History Hall?)

The interesting question is how you deal with it when the organisation (or crazy cult) to which you belong can be ridiculed with such ease. I guess it's all part of the trip, and helps one to not take oneself too seriously. Cool

This person wrote a very nice post here. In the post this person says [Quote]"I would have given anything to speak to a former member of Brahma Kumaris but I never found one, and no one else had even the faintest idea of what I was going through."[Quote] Sad Post date 11/28/2005

This is the Overview of Brahma Kumaris according to them via the former BK member. They even mention the PBKs at the bottom of the page. The date of the post is 11/28/2005.

Interesting site references Tete, thanks. It seems like a pretty fair and balanced report on the BKs. I hadn't realised quite what a problem the 'destruction any minute now' dogma is for some people: I just never accepted their timelines, but i was in a minority there i think... This must surely be a useful thing for XBKs to focus on when de-programming themselves, as the murlis and the BK party line are repeatedly proven inaccurate over the decades... Wink

in the continual assertions that there are 'only a few days left' and suchlike, and this in the 1960s (and ever after...). 40+ years later, still we are here, the world has not yet been destroyed, and still the BKs will tell you that the world will end this year (or next year 'at the latest')... and I bet you this time next year we will still be here, and they will still be saying the same... Confused

howiemac,

I agree the overview and the personal story were balanced. I checked out the site a bit and I don't think I would join. They have a section on yoga (about the dangers). Odd, as I always thought yoga (exercise) was part of what BKs did. I thought how nice that he is able to keep some of the nice things of the BK experience (I lived in my very own utopia).

My child can do the hardest poses and some folks do a sigh when they see her at class. I was a little surprised to see that there is concern on this site about that. My child has done yoga since about age 2-3 and she has her religious beliefs and it has never been an issue. I teach a class for DSP's and in the Health and Wellness section we promote YOGA...state wide for seniors, disabled and staff.

I did take note that this is a new topic for them and have not yet given it any group discussions. I was impressed (very scholarly) with the XBK in that (he/she) was not judgmental given that the site seems on the Holy Rolly bent. I wonder if they will pass on the message (XBKchat). I also notice they do a radio talk show....future topic BKs? Wink

When I did the 7 days course, as with any thing you want to set out to do, I asked what was the most difficult part of Raja Yoga to the seniors in the centre, after all the course "seemed" pretty straightforward at first. The reply was "Faith in the Drama". I didn't think about it much then, and maybe I should think less of it now too !

Yes, we can get to know GOd NOW, we can love our family NOW (or get to eventually), we can even get to love oneself NOW, but to know what is happening tomorrow.....well let's wait until tomorrow......

However, like any other religion or cult or any belief system...we won't know until we get there to see if the grass is greener or on fire.
