El fraude de la Psicología Positiva

Post03 Nov 2012

Positive Psychology: Sympathetic Magic
Marino Perez-Alvarez, University of Oviedo

Positive Psychology (PSP) is probably the biggest movement in psychology so far this century. However, despite its enormous success and attractiveness with its star topics (happiness, welfare, optimism), it lacks scientific and philosophical foundations on which it can be sustained. The author begins by noting that the PSP is more consistent with a religious movement than with the development of a science.

More importantly, it is argued that the PSP have certain fallacies such as a supposed equation of happiness and inherently positive nature with certain psychological characteristics. It is argued further that the effectiveness attributed to the PSP does not square with the evidence available, in particular with reference to cancer.

As for the positive psychotherapy to increase happiness and decrease depression it does not seem to differ from placebo. As much as the PSP exhibits the positive side, it does have its downside, as, by creating a division in the psyche, the tyranny of maintaining a positive attitude and optimism becomes unforgiving. However, the bottom line is that happiness is not a principle of life which a science can give, according to the final philosophical argument.

I have read articles on this too. The main themes they share are that the human experience is a rounded and complete one that encompasses all emotions and attitudes. The healthy psyche is one that deals with life’s events and the many emotions they bring honestly , openly, with patience and humility. To degrade the value to us of ”non-happy” experiences it to degrade ourselves.
