Although there are any number of small cults and groups that would save the world though genocide, from Asahara’s Aum Shinrikyo - who were caught and stopped after testing the efficacy of Sarin gas in the Tokyo subway killing 13 and affecting 1000 others (Asahara was executed in Japan in 2018) - to ISIS (whom we all know about), to the ”Christian” Lord’s Army in Uganda, the real danger is the US government.
Especially since the George W Bush presidency, with a short hiatus during Obama’s 8 years, the American executive branch and large parts of Congress are filled with neo-evangelist christians who are preparing for "the Rapture" and the Second Coming of Christ. The grown ups have all either quit or been sacked. These (other) self-proclaimed instruments of God form the electoral support and power base base of Donald Trump. He is dependent on them and their wealth and influence, despite not being one of them in beliefs, and is quite opposite to them morally even more than he depends on the oft-quoted disempowered white middle aged working class of the rust belt who have limited money and no influence except their vote.
These include Vishnu Party Pence and Mike Pompeo, former head of the CIA and now Secretary of State who attend regular meetings with fellow god-botherers in the Administration to formulate how to proceed doing God's work. Pompeo as the top "diplomat", openly and repeatedly and undiplomatically said this is what motivates him, how he keeps the Bible open on his desk and consults it regularly with every decision. These people, like the Moonies, the ISIS fighters, the Aum Shinrikyo terrorsits, believe they are doing ”God’s work” by manipulating Middle East foreign policy in particular to fulfil
their interpretation of the Book Of Revelation.
They are the ones who pushed Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the US Embassy there. They are the ones who work hand in hand with ultra-Zionists who care nothing for the plight of the displaced Palestinians or even the secular democratic fabric of the secular state of Israel. (Ironically, there is a branch of Orthodox Jews who believe the modern State of Israel should not even exist!).
Here we have an administration driven by greed for oil and military-industrial profiteering who rationalise their decisions according to an ingrained messianic-saviour complex and are manipulating a politically embattled narcissistic sociopath whom they see as placed in the White House by God to fulfil the prophecy of Armageddon.
The mimetic ”God" of the BKs will sit back and take all the credit in the minds of BK believers while the ”god” of the US right wing Christian fundamentalists does all the work.
Cheeky question: if Armageddon actually does take place, whose "One True God” shoudl get the credit, the one that did the actual work or the others that did not do much except sit back and wait for it to happen, predicting it year in and out until it happens (because there's enough crazies hearing the voices of god botherers inside and outside their heads ’inspiring’ them? ) ?
... When fundamentalist Christians read the Bible in the 20th century, something has been fundamentally changed, in the last 50 years in particular. And that is, they're able to open texts for the first time in 2,000 years--texts like Revelation, texts like the Book of Daniel, all the prophets--and they can begin to see the possibilities of a literal fulfillment, not a symbolic fulfillment as in the past. That is, Jerusalem would mean Jerusalem. The Jewish people would mean literally the Zionists and the Jewish state that now exists ...
In June 1967, at the conclusion of the Six Day War, the Israelis found themselves, for the first time in 2,000 years, in control of the Old City of Jerusalem. Jews could go to the wall and pray. There was this euphoric sense of victory and even survival after this war, from just a Jewish point of view, from an Israeli point of view. Christians, however, who were fundamentalist interpreters of the Bible, had a completely different take on this ...
