Chris Lewis and Clarke Peters ... BKWSU Living in Style

Post24 May 2009

Its the time of the year the BKWSU targets 18-35 year olds with its Living in Style program presenting the usual mix of Brahma Kumari adherents, not clearly labeled as such, and non-BKs ... Living in Style at the Global Cooperation House, 7th June 2009.

Last years VIP "microphone soul" (used to attract an audience) and interviewee, former England cricketer Chris Lewis, has recently been jailed for 13 years for smuggling cocaine into Britain.

This year they are playing it safe with the distinctly over 35 years old Brahma Kumaris follower and 'Detective Freamon of The Wire', actor Clarke Peters. Other invitees psychologist Mamta Bhatia, accountant Pinkesh Patel, PR guru Rachelle Gaskell, some of whom we expect are also covert BKs.

Lewis was found guilty of carrying a liquid form of dissolved cocaine with a street value of more than £140,000. Judge Nicholas Ainley accused him of "a cowardly attempt to evade justice" attempting to blame his co-conspirator. As both men had been motivated by greed, they were given the same prison sentence. Lewis, who admitted regularly smoking marijuana further had traces of cannabis residue found in his luggage and on cigarette papers tucked into a paperback book. He offered his companion £100,000 to "take the rap" for the crime.

In a genius stroke of lack of intuition, or the willingness to make compromises in the name of fame, here he is being interviewed by Brahma Kumari leader Jayanti Kirpalani about his "values and principles" ... the "courage and conviction that encouraged him" for the sake of his own "inner values".

A national tabloid christened him the "Prat without the Hat" in 1994 when he shaved his head on tour in the West Indies and then suffering sunstroke, missing the first match of the series. He attracted further ridicule for posing in his underwear for a magazine. He told the court that the drugs in tinned fruit juice were a present for his mum.

The player was regarded by many as something of an enigma blaming his inconsistent performance on his mental attitude. Former England team mate Derek Pringle, writing in the Daily Telegraph last year, described how Lewis appeared to be the perfect player physically, but that "his mind often appeared a confused mess" put this "puzzling state of mind" down to his religious upbringing. He described Lewis's apparent vanity and his "liking for the finer things in life", such as "designer clothes and flash cars which were not within the orbit of most cricketers' salaries".

Yes, just like the BKWSU. Its about never ending self improvement ... and making compromises for the sake of money and appearances. Its just striking how often they get it wrong.

Fairly low level and stereotypical images of "success" for young black males, is not it?
