Coking dal is so simple!!

First you take 1 cup lentils/dal, add 2 cups water,
1 tsp. salt(according to taste), turmeric(optional),
little mixed vegetable(optional)and
put it all in a pressure cooker and cook till 2 whistle,

if you don't have pressure cooker, than you can cook it in a saucepan for 20-25 minutes till tender and color changes.

Note: The vegetables like tomatoes, cauli, spinach, beans etc. are optional and can be added to make it like a good hearty soup.

Let me know if you need other recipies, or need clarification!!! :D

Om shanti!

I appreciate the information.

In the saucepan or pot is it the same quantity of water?

Hi kevin,

I found a website with dal recipie given below!! The ratio of dal to water varies according to the dal because smaller dal requires less water and thicker and bigger dals require a little extra water and also it depends on your taste if you like thin than a little extra tbs. water.
I think after you cook 3, 4 times you will know exactly how to make it .. Good luck

Method

1. Wash the dal like rice, soak for 20 minutes.
2. Place plenty of water, add dal and boil.
3. Simmer and cook covered, add more water if required.

1. Toor dal(big) takes approx. 40 minutes over stove
2. 3 whistles pressure cooker
3. 1:3 water in microwave high 12-14 minutes.

1. Yellow moong(small) dal: 25 minutes on stove
2. 2 whistles in pressure cooker
3. 1:2 water in microwave high 8-9 minutes.

Dear Papaya,

The dal should be semi-thick after cooling for 5to 10 minutes. It should be a semi-thick soup consistency. There is no need to rinse it after it's cooked otherwise all the nutrients will wash off... Very Happy

papaya,

I just wanted to share one more very healthy recipie call kichari..

It's a mixture of rice, dal, vegetable and a little spice. It is actually a complete meal packed with nutirients and very filling becauce it has everything we need as nutrients...

Take 1.5 cup moong, massor(or any kind will do), 3/4 cup rice, some chopped veggies any will do like beans, potato, carrots, cauli, little chopped ginzer& chiles(optional), 1tsp turmeric, 1.5tsp salt

Put all the above ingridents with 2.5 cups water in a pressure cooker and cook it for 2 whistle, other wise cook in a saucepan covered with lid for 30 minutes or until soft.
All the ingriedents can be adjusted to taste.. Let me know if you need other recipies..
